Can you say “Sysomos”?
Since we launched publicly in 2008, it has been interesting – and sometimes humorous – to hear the different ways that people have said Sysomos.
Given the challenges to pronounce Sysomos, we thought it might be fun and educational to take to the streets of sun-drenched Toronto for some “research”. We interviewed about 50 people, and encouraged them to take a stab at saying “Sysomos”. Thanks to everyone who agreed to participate.
The video below confirms our belief that we’ve still got a lot of work to do! But as we like to tell ourselves around the office, Sysomos may be difficult to say but it’s easy to use.
For the record, Sysomos is pronounced sis-o-mohs. The name is Greek for “everything together”.

It is not really about pronunciation, but about why these folks could not pronounce the word.
Net/net we do not read anymore. Certainly no one is reading classics that are written/translated in/from Greek or Latin.
Lewis Lapham has a theory vis-a-vis the cultural changes and break down in communications. We have a limited vocabulary compared to someone living in the 1940s (Them 10,000 words, today 5.000) because we have stopped reading, certainly cannot write as well as folks did in the late 1800s and are basically an image driven society.
It is no surprise that all these folks would be stymied.
So I got it right then? Tis me at 0:28. I want my prize.

Thanks for the comment. We could probably make another video asking people if they knew the origins of Sysomos. I wonder how many people would know that it’s even Greek.
