Pretty much everyone knows about Twitter but does that mean it’s gone mainstream?
According to research done by Arbitron and Edison Research, 92% of people over the age of 12 had heard about Twitter but only 8% said they had used it.
If you take this finding with the fact a small percentage of Twitter users account for a big chunk of activity, it is easy to argue Twitter is a niche service – whereas Facebook is mainstream.
An interesting question is what does Twitter’s awareness vs. usage mean to brands and marketers.
Sure, Twitter has 200 million users but what does that number really mean if it’s just a small percentage of the population and that of its 200 million users, only a small percentage are really engaged?
