Sysomos Heartbeat Updates – Advanced Filters, Bulk Sentiment and Highlighting Optimization

Yesterday we made some big updates to Heartbeat, our real-time social media monitoring and engagement software. Some of the key features of this update are:

Advanced Filter System: Heartbeat has always allowed users to stack filters on top of each other to really refine the data you were looking at. The tagging rules let you define different competitors and topics, which can be combined with one or more filters on age, gender, location, source, authority etc. With today’s update we are taking this filtering to the next level by allowing you to combine your filters in any possible combination. You can now slice and dice the data however way you like.

For example, you can now easily do something as complicated as: ”BlackBerry Playbook” OR the ”Motorola Xoom” that mention Apps OR gaming but only High Authority” (7+)Blogposts” that don’t have ”Positive Sentiment” with the new advanced filter interface.

To use these new filtering options just select “Advanced Filter” from the Filter drop-down menu in either the “Your Heartbeats” or “Measure” tabs. As always, you can also set up email alerts and bookmark your filter sets for future reference.

Bulk Sentiment Change: Heartbeat has always allowed you to manually update sentiment of any single posts to positive, negative, or neutral in a single click. Working with large Heartbeat accounts, it can however become cumbersome to update many posts. With our latest update, you can now update the sentiment of up to 100 posts in a single action just like you already could for DeleteStarUnstar, and Close Case for multiple posts. You can also use custom tagging rules to identify positive and negative conversations using your industry specific terms.

To do so, select “Change Sentiment” from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the Your Heartbeats page. With this change, Heartbeat offers three ways to update sentiment: opening the right most dropdown to edit demographics and sentiment, one-click change by clicking the small sentiment icon, and the new bulk sentiment change.

Highlighting in Your Heartbeats Optimization: We’ve optimized how keywords of interest in posts are highlighted. Heartbeat now highlights the post of interest in yellow based on the tagging rules for just the tags that are assigned to that post. Previously we used either all queries or all tagging rules in the Heartbeat. With this change the highlighting is more relevant and meaningful to the post you are reading.

If you are a Sysomos user and have any questions about any of these new features, please don’t hesitate to contact your account manager.

Look out for more exciting updates around Facebook we have coming very soon.

Introducing Our New Resource Center

Our goal here at Sysomos is to continuously help you and your company make the most of social media. Be it by constantly updating our product line to better suit the ever-changing needs of our customers, providing interesting and relevant blog posts and by constantly educating our community through webinars and speaking engagements.

With that in mind, we are proud to announce the launch of our new Resources Center on our website. In this section of our website you will be able to find information that can help you and your brand make the most out of using social media. This section will be continuously updated with new content designed for people just starting out with social media all the way to the more advanced social media professionals.

Our first addition to the Resource Center is the presentation Different Types of Social Media Channels. Inside you will find introductions to some of the most popular social media channels; blogs, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, forums and message boards. As well, the presentation points out different ways in which each of these channels can be used along with some real life examples of how existing companies are using them.

In the blogs section we explore different kinds of blogs and how they can be used. For example, will your blog be done to shed insight on what is happening within your company? Will it be insight from someone like your CEO? Will it focus on your industry? Will it show that your brand is a thought leader in your industry? Or, will your blog be used internally for your employees only? Will you have one or many blogs? With explanations and examples of each style you will be more informed to make the right decision for how your company will approach social media.

Please take a look at our new Social Media Resource Center and keep checking back for new and updated content. Also, please leave your comments on the content and what you would like to see in this section in the future.

Sysomos Heartbeat Updates – Multiple Twitter Handles, Additional Forum Coverage, Weekly Reports and More

We are constantly improving all of our software offerings, releasing updates based on user feedback every couple of weeks. If you are a Sysomos user you’ll know this from the emails that we send out with each major update. We’ve decided to now also post each of our feature updates right here in the blog where they’re easy to find and all our readers can see just how often we are updating the software to work better for you. Keep your eyes out for many more of these posts in the future.

Yesterday we rolled out our latest update for Heartbeat, our real-time social media monitoring and engagement offering. Some of the key features in this update were:

Additional Forum Coverage: In December we updated our forum and message board coverage for MAP to cover 30-40% more content. Now, we bring that same coverage over to Heartbeat to crawl additional 200 million forum posts per month to help find your search terms.

Multiple Twitter Handles: While you’ve always been able to engage on Twitter right from within Heartbeat, you were only able to attach one Twitter profile to each account. We now offer you the option to attach multiple Twitter accounts to each Heartbeat account so you can engage from different handles with the click of a button.

Weekly Summary Report Email: Not every company/brand needs a updated report seven days a week. While you could get daily reports before, we’ve now allowed users to get a weekly summary instead if that fits your needs better. You can configure this through the “Email Alerts” area under the Settings Tab.

Highlighting Based on Tagging Rules: When viewing the content in the “Your Heartbeats” tab, you may have noticed that keywords from “Queries” were highlighted. We have now changed the yellow highlighting to instead use keywords from the “Tagging Rules” to make it easier to see why a post is assigned a particular tag.

Flag-Query with Option to Delete: If you are a Facebook Page Central user you most likely know of the ability to flag specific words that need to be brought to your attention. This allows you to receive email updates every time certain specified terms have been posted/commented on your fan page. Now you have the ability to delete the mentions right from the email. Just click the X beside the Facebook users name and it will delete the wall post or comment from your Facebook Fan Page.

If you are a Sysomos user and have any questions about any of these new features, don’t hesitate to contact your account manager.

We’ll have some more updates to highlight in the near future, so keep your eye out for these.

An Update on the State of the TwitterSphere

In June 2009, we published an in-depth look at the TwitterSphere. And in the past 18 months, we’ve done a number of other reports looking at the different aspects of Twitter’s growth and activity.

Today, we’re excited about the release of a new report taking a look at how people are using Twitter, and it compares with a year ago. We examined 1.02 billion tweets made by 20.3 million Twitter users. Some of the highlights of the report include:

- 44% of the total Twitter population joined between January 2009 and Aug 2010.
- 82% of Twitter users now provide a name, compared with 33% in 2009.
- 73% provide location information compared with 44% in 2009.
- 63.3% now provide a bio, compared with 31% in 2009.
- 45% of users submit a Web site address, compared with 22% in 2009.
- 80.6% have made fewer than 500 tweets.
- 22.5% have accounted for about 90% of all activity.
- Users with more than 100 friends has increased by three-fold to 21% since 2009.
- Justin Bieber is one of top two-word phrases and top name in user’s bios.

The complete report can be found here. So far, there’s been coverage from ReadWriteWeb and Mashable.

Sysomos Supports #MOvember

In case you haven’t heard, the month of November has officially been renamed MOvember. Well, not really, but kind of.

MOvember is a fund raising initiative for prostate cancer research. It was started in Australia, but has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. Why “MOvember” you ask? The name comes from the fact that fundraisers are encouraged to grow a moustache for the month of November.

We at Sysomos love to do good and have fun at the same time, so we decided to get in on the MOaction. A few of us around the office have started to grow ‘staches in hopes of raising money for this great cause.

We’re not the only ones though. Using MAP, our social media monitoring and analytics platform we were able to plot out people tweeting the word MOvember across the world:

It’s not just regular people talking about MOvember either. A look at some traditional media outlets shows that media from around the globe are also talking about the fun fundraising event:

Later this month we will write another post and look at some social media statistics about how the month of MOvember went. In the meantime though, if you’d like to help the Sysomos crew raise some money for prostate cancer research you can click the link bellow and donate to an individual team member or our team as a whole. As well, we’re currently working on a little Sysomos MOvember shindig here in Toronto for later in the month, but we’ll release details about that as they become available.

Click here to donate to our Sysomos ‘staches. For more information about MOvember from the official MOvember site, click here.

We thank you in advance for your kind help and donations.

A Professional Way to Manage Facebook Pages

One of the most interesting parts of Facebook’s growth this year has been the growing number of companies that have embraced Facebook Pages as another way to establish and enhance their digital footprints.

Some of these companies are using their Facebook Pages as the key landing destination for consumers because they are vehicles to dynamically deliver a variety of content, as well as engage users. There are also lots of companies using Facebook Pages as a one-two punch with their Web sites.

One of the major challenges for companies with Facebook Pages is how to effectively manage them. Since they are places in which consumers can leave comments, it means Facebook Pages need to be moderated on a regular basis. This can be an even bigger task if a company has multiple Facebook Pages. As well, it can be challenging to automate tasks and create reports on activity.

As the leading social media monitoring and analytics companies, Sysomos recognized there needed to be a better way to manage Facebook Pages.

So, we’re excited about the launch of Facebook Page Central, the first professional tool to moderate comments, automate tasks and run reports.

Facebook Page Central´s features include:

  • Auto-deletion of unwanted posts and spam.
  • The ability to create reports about the number of posts and comments, the level of engagement, hottest topics, the most active fans and sentiment analysis.
  • Administrative notifications via e-mail if a comment is left. A list of keywords can be created, which if found, notifications will quickly be sent.
  • Workflow management tools to assign moderation responsibilities to members of your team.

“Facebook Page Central reflects how Sysomos continues to evolve and improve its services,” said Nick Koudas, Sysomos’ president.

“Our product portfolio now includes our flagship product, MAP, which delivers analytics and in-depth reports, and Heartbeat, which provides monitoring and measurement services.”

Introducing Sysomos’ New Community Manager

Greetings, Sysomos community!

My name is Sheldon Levine but some of you may know me by my social media alias, 40deuce. I just wanted to take the time to introduce myself as Sysomos’ new community manager.

Some of you may have already noticed me getting involved with Sysomos over the past two weeks but from here on, I’ll be much more visible and available.

I’m really excited to be working here with the fantastic staff at Sysomos. I’ve been getting to know the services, Heartbeat and MAP, all the people around the office. So far, I’m loving it .

The company was doing great before I stepped in the door, and I’m here to give it more of presence in the community.

Right now, you may be asking what exactly does a community manager do?

That question is answered differently by every organization, but I’ll tell you what I’ll be doing to start.

For the first little while, my goal is to get better acquainted with you, the people of the Internet. Specifically, I’m going to be learning about the people within the social media world, and what they’re saying about themes that revolve around our business of social media monitoring and analytics

I’m going to be tweeting, reading blogs, and meeting people on behalf of both myself and Sysomos. I will also be contributing to this blog to help add to the great stuff Mark Evans has been writing. As well, I will be helping to create some of the great special reports that Sysomos puts out, as well as a few other behind the scenes things.

I really love meeting and talking with new and interesting people, so I’m really happy to be doing this on behalf of a company that I really believe in.

Finally, a little about me. I recently graduated with a Masters in Professional Communication from the University of Western Sydney in Australia where I focused on social media.

I’m a big nerd and love all kinds of geek and tech toys. I also love to write and share cool things that I find online. I mostly do those things through a few personal blogs. You can see them all on my landing page.

If you want to know more, you can always get a hold of me via Twitter at either the official Sysomos account or my personal one, 40deuce. And of course, there’s always my email sheldon@sysomos.com.

Can’t wait to meet and get to know all of you! Speak to you soon.

Can You Say Sysomos?

Can you say “Sysomos”?

Since we launched publicly in 2008, it has been interesting – and sometimes humorous – to hear the different ways that people have said Sysomos.

Given the challenges to pronounce Sysomos, we thought it might be fun and educational to take to the streets of sun-drenched Toronto for some “research”. We interviewed about 50 people, and encouraged them to take a stab at saying “Sysomos”. Thanks to everyone who agreed to participate.

The video below confirms our belief that we’ve still got a lot of work to do! But as we like to tell ourselves around the office, Sysomos may be difficult to say but it’s easy to use.

For the record, Sysomos is pronounced sis-o-mohs. The name is Greek for “everything together”.

Let us know what you think about the video.
