Tiger Woods’ Reputation Rebounds Big-Time

Nothing like a good old-fashioned apology to make people forgive and forget.

It’s an approach that appears to be working for Tigers Woods, who gave an extensive press conference on Monday as he prepares for his first golf tournament, The Masters, after taking a self-imposed hiatus in the wake a salacious sex scandal.

Since Woods’ press conference, positive sentiment within the blogopshere has jumped to 45% from 32% during the time between his now-infamous car accident in late-November and the press conference. Meanwhile, negative sentiment has dropped to 17% from 22%.

On Friday, Tiger Woods emerged out of hiding to issue an apology for his well-publicized series of affairs. It was a 13-minute, well-rehearsed and tightly-scripted performance that left many people unimpressed, and many questions still unanswered.

Before his apology on Friday morning, we used MAP to get a sense of how the social media ecosystem had been talking about Woods since his now-famous late-night car accident in late-November that led to revelations of his affairs. We discovered that since the accident, negative sentiment within the blogosphere had fallen from 32% to 20%, while positive sentiment has climbed to 29% from 22%.

To see how Tiger’s apology went over, we used MAP for get another social media snapshot. Positive sentiment dropped slightly to 28% from 29%, while negative sentiment jumped to 25% from 20%. This suggests Woods’ apology wasn’t embraced and that it gave many people another reason to offer critical comment.

Overall, there have been 19,524 blog posts that have mentioned “Tiger Woods” since Friday, 15,142 news articles and 345,119 tweets.

As the world waits eagerly for the Tiger Woods press conference today at 11 a.m. (EST), we decided to take a quick look at what’s been happening within the social media landscape since his much-publicized car accident on Nov. 27.

Since the accident and the subsequent revelations that Woods had a series of affairs, the negative sentiment within the blogosphere has dropped from 32% to 20%, while positive sentiment has climbed to 29% from 22%, although it has dropped in the past month or so.

This could suggest that bloggers have moved on, although Woods’ comments today will surely spark a lot more conversations.

Overall, our BuzzGraph shows that the most conversations involving Tiger Woods since his accident have been on “golfer” with strong associations to “Sawgrass” (the golf course in which he will be speaking today to a small group of hand-picked reporters), “PGA” (the Professional Golf Association) and “infidelities”.

Tiger Woods’ Reputation Takes Beating

In the past week, professional golfer Tiger Woods’ squeaky-clean reputation has taken a major hit following his mysterious car crash nearly his home in Florida in the early morning hours of Nov. 27.

After days of speculation about how the crash may have been been instigated after Woods and his wife, Elin, argued over Woods’ having an affair, Woods finally disclosed on his Web site that: “I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart”.

There’s no doubt Woods’ image has been damaged, although it appears that none of his sponsors have decided to part ways…yet. Still, we wanted to see just how much of a hit that Woods’ reputation had taken so we used MAP, our flagship social media analytics service, to get a lay of the land.

Before the accident, the sentiment about Tiger Woods within social media and traditional media was 85% positive:

In the week after the accident, the sentiment has not surprisingly tumbled to 60% positive. What’s particularly interesting is the negative sentiment has jumped to 40% from 15%, while the positive sentiment has dropped to 14% from 49%.

In terms of the key discussion themes, the most dominant is “Grubb” – Jaimie Grubb, the Las Vegas waitress who Woods’ apparently met when his wife was seven months pregnant with their first child. A voice-mail recording of Woods asking Grubb to remove her name from her telephone’s caller ID likely prompted Woods to come clean.

There’s also a strong connection between “Grubb” and “Urchitel” – Rachel Urchitel, a New York hostess who has been speculated to also have had an affair with Woods.
