I want to start this post off with a bit of a confession: I’m a big tech/gadget geek. I love anything that’s new and shiny and electronic. I also have a feeling that a lot of our readers are the same way.
If you are, then there’s no doubt you heard something about the Consumer Electronic Show that happened in Las Vegas last weekend. The three day show highlighted some of newest and coolest technology gadgets that we’ll be seeing coming out over the next year. For myself, the highlights included the new Android Honeycomb OS made specifically for tablets (just don’t tell my iPhone I said that though) and a pair of sunglasses that have a camera imbedded in the bridge made by Polaroid.
It turns out that a lot of people in the social media realm are also big tech/gadget fans as we uncovered by doing a bit of analysis using MAP, our social media monitoring and analytics platform. We decided to look at just what was buzzing around the social web about CES. While the trade show was only from January 6th to the 9th we gave a little leeway on the dates to account for buzz before and after.
The first thing we did was looked at how much talk was going on around the social web about CES. Our popularity chart bellow shows that all social channels were buzzing about the trade show, including traditional media with online outlets.
Next we decided to look at just where all this buzz was coming from. While the actual CES took place in Las Vegas in the United States, it had the whole world talking as we can see from our geo-location map.
If we take a look at our buzzgraph, which pulls out the words used most in conjunction with our search terms, we see that there was a lot of talk about the products coming out. Some of the words speak specifically to devices such as the Xoom tablet and the iPad. Other conversations were talking about the makers of some of these technologies like Motorola, Samsung, Polaroid and Sony. There is also a large amount of talk having to do with the fact that everything at the show was brand new, such as; “introducing”, “announces”, “showcase” and “unveil”.
Lastly, we decided to use MAP’s comparison tool to see which of the new products was creating the most amount of buzz. Rather than trying to compare specific products though, we decided to compare product categories to see which may the hottest consumer category for this year. For the comparison we decided to look at how the share of voice was split between tablets, phones and cameras (which includes both still image and video). Not surprising, it looks like tablets are going to be the hottest items this year with them commanding 44% of the conversation. Phones weren’t too far behind with 39% of the conversation and cameras seemed not as popular with only 16%.
