When the Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, “The only constant is change,” he could have been anticipating social media, quite possibly even the social media trends bound to happen for 2020.

The platforms, features, user preferences, and other factors are constantly shifting on social media. Businesses today need to consider not only what’s happening now but what’s likely to happen in the near future.

Here are the four major social media trends we project for 2020:

1. Social Media Usage Will Expand Across All Demographics
While it may not seem like a bold prediction to say that social media use will increase, there are some important implications to this that may not be obvious at first.

One of the most significant trends for marketers is that older people are flocking to platforms that have been mainly used by younger users! We saw this happen with Facebook, which has practically come full circle in the last decade. Going from a young and hip site based around college to one that now has many older users. Even Instagram is starting to increase users in their 40, 50s and even 60+. Proof of this can be found in the growing number of older influencers on Instagram.

Of course, with anything on the internet there will be those who participate and those who don’t. Keep this in mind when doing market research around social media. Remember, when looking at your target audience, don’t just look at the present numbers but emerging ones.

2. More Live and Ephemeral Content
Live video platforms such as Facebook Live and quick, ephemeral content such as Instagram and Facebook Stories, are quickly growing and overshadowing traditional posts!

Stories and live video are great ways to give your audience an up-close and timely look at your products, business or latest news. Ordinary posts are more like traditional written content such as blog posts and articles, however, social media audiences like dynamic and interactive content that makes them feel like they’re part of or at least close to the action.

With Facebook Live, you can engage with followers in real-time — stories have a similar urgency even if people aren’t watching you live. They can still respond to what you’re saying and know that the topic is still relevant.

3. Influencer Marketing Will Evolve
Influencer marketing took the social media world by storm a few years ago and shows no signs of declining. However, there are a few changes that are likely to change the way it’s done in the coming years:

  • The rise of micro-influencers — many small and midsize businesses don’t have the budget to hire influencers with huge social media followings, thus giving micro-influencers an environment to thrive.
  • More transparency and honesty – more often than not, influencers will give their followers an unbiased view of the product they are reviewing, however, there are influencers who are not as honest and will take the money over a promising review. Keep this in mind when skimming through options!

4. Marketers Will Have Access to More Sophisticated Data
In the age of big data, businesses are collecting more information about their audience. Targeted ads on Facebook and other platforms are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to big data, even ads are becoming more personalized! Social media sites are especially good for ad retargeting. Content will increasingly be personalized based on the demographics of the user including their age, gender, location and even buying habits.

It’s important to keep up with the latest happenings as social media has a great impact on every business, whether online or brick and mortar.
